KUMARI is a small village sprawled and nestled deep in the hills of rural Nepal. From the heights of the rice paddies you can see the Annapurna range rising in the distance above the bushels of marigolds. Resourceful children build their own bamboo swings and homemade kites. Being so far removed from any major cities makes Kumari peaceful but also deprives the area from basic public services, namely hospitals and schools.
JAGAT LAMA, a mountain guide who mostly caters to the tourist industry, watched as his father died of an easily treatable disease in Kumari. With no road for an ambulance and the nearest health clinic being more than a full day’s walk, Jagat was inspired to build a local hospital. He spent years pooling his resources and eventually in May of 2013, opened the hospital to the Kumari community – complete with a new road for an ambulance, a women’s vocational training center, and a sister elementary school nearby.
THE EARTHQUAKE destroyed much of Nepal, especially Kumari as it was within a few miles of the epicenter. The road is ruined, the hospital is destroyed, and the survivors in Kumari are devastated. Just as it has been a struggle to provide a healthcare infrastructure to Kumari in the past, there is little chance that any international aid will reach the rural village for months.
Health and Ed4 Nepal is the non-profit backbone behind Jagat’s work in Kumari. Two Colorandans started the foundation after they visited Kumari and were inspired by Jagat and the impact he made on the community. For years they have been crucial in helping Jagat improve the Kumari community. After the earthquake, they, and all those who have visited Kumari, joined together to immediately begin fundraising to provide immediate medical care to the Kumari community now that the hospital isn’t functional. Most importantly, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Kumari. http://www.healthanded4nepal.org/
Anna and Max traveled to Kumari in 2013 and have seen first hand the impact that the hospital has on the community. We are partnering with Health and Ed4 Nepal for this fundraising effort ; anyone who donates to the cause will get an 8x10 print of their choice below. All photos below were taken by Max and Anna in Nepal-- from the Khumbu Valley and Everest Region to the rural hills of Kumari.
